    Different Offset Readings Help

    Hi
Any ideas on why 3 CD's all in the database return different offset readings.

Miles Davis Kind of Blue +97

    Queen Greatest Hits 2 +364

    Eric Clapton Unplugged +1598

All these CD's have the correct disc number on the middle underside circle

CDR drive is a Ricoh MP7163A although not in user listings similar Ricoh's return an offset of +97 ""same has one of mine""

While writing many CD's from local database are incorrect..example

Rolling Stones Hot Rocks Disc2 becomes...

CD TITLE 2. Decemberski Koncert Revije Manager
    ARTIST Simfoniki RTV Slovenija

If query is made via FREEDB.ORG then correct info is achieved..

    This also happens with Nero..

EAC looks a great program, and before leaving beginner mode I copied and burnt a cd with no problems. So these are just questions..

    Who am I to gripe.

    TIA
    Peter

If Andre had one euro for every time this question was asked, he would be a very rich man!
Loads of information can be found about this by using the search function in this forum, reading the EAC website or even going to the Coaster Factory.

Okay, that said... the CD's return differnt offset readings because they are different pressings from the ones that make up the EAC data base, (even if the serial numbers are the same). If you get two CD's that give the same result, go with that. If they also give the same result as those reported at the Coaster Factory, even better!

But really, offsets are not important from an audio quality perspective. I personally just use a combined offset which can be obtained by using a test disc which you can burn yourself.

Sorry, I really don't understand the second half of your post. Are you saying that your local database is wrong but freedb is correct??

    OK
    Thanks for link.

I have downloaded the database at freedb.org,when some disc are inserted I get wrong information returned..If I then allow EAC to check online at any of the freedb servers,I get the correct information.I have found Nero to do the same thing,is the downloaded database any different to the online version.????..If all of this is down to the ID of a disc like you stated for the reference disc for testing offset..HOW come gracenote never has this problem with bouncing back wrong titles and spelling mistakes...

My guess Freedb is user submitted and not checked unlike its commercial counterpart..This doesn't account for the varying titles of a local freedb versus online..

    Thanks
    Peter

You cleared this up for me too...

I was getting pissed that I had 5 identical CD's that never gave the same offset. I settled on the combined offset so I see that will do me just fine

    jp

    Combined offset: For me anyways..

    TDK VeloCD 12/10/32 = +69
    TDK VeloCD 32/10/40B = +6

    Hi,

I have the same problem with the freedb local database. Online I get correct results, from local database I sometimes get wrong info. I found that the disc id's in the local database appeare more than once.

I don't seem to have this problem... EAC just plain refuses to recognize any CD I put in the drive. I've tried at least 10 CD's that are in that one list, but it ALWAYS says that it's not found in the database. I'm not sure why this is.. does EAC differentiate between different pressings of the same disc? From what I've read about it, it does not. (which is why they give you the serial # on the list) Anyone know possible reasons why it won't work?
