I had a problem not connecting, the first thing I did was to reboot after loading the program. I also disconnected my network connection. Then I downloaded the site lists. I was then able to connect. I am currently using three computers to rip, after about an hour I lose the FreeDB. I am not sure if it is a security setting in one of my routers, but I close the program down, disconnect my network connection (physically), reconnect the network connection and then start the program. I think the problem might be with either my wireless access point that I use as a physically connected router as well or my hardwired router connected to my Cable Modem. Or it could be my Comcast connection dropping the connection in order to equally distribute bandwidth to other subscribers? Not sure, but I managed to do this several times and it worked each time.

Using EAC V0.965 prebeta 5 (8 March 2004) with Windows XP Pro SP2, I am unable to connect to any freedb from my computer at work. I have read this entire thread and tried every single bit of advice, from changing servers, disabling any anti-virus software, hitting S-DEL before connecting, to deleting all the DAT files. None of these techniques work, and I'd like to contribute some observations.
Using Ethereal, I traced all of EAC's network activity and captured the query string it's sending to the server. I took that same query string and tried it using other clients. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox were able to fetch the album information immediately, both directly and through an intervening proxy server. The command-line wget program did the same. Even making a raw HTTP request through telnet works just fine. Conclusion: EAC is the problem. Note that when EAC makes its HTTP request, the data gets split between an initial packet containing the GET method, query string, and HTTP version, and a second continuation packet containing a CRLF pair, the User-Agent header, and four CRLF pairs. Note the only two CRLF pairs should be necessary here: one to terminate the User-Agent header, and one to separate the headers from the body. I'n not sure if the extra two CRLF pairs are causing trouble. Immediately after that continuation packet, the server sends a TCP packet with the Reset bit set. The indicates that the connection is now closed, but EAC continues waiting for a response until it times out. I'd attach the filtered Ethereal output, but I can't see how to attach a file here. Let me know if you want me to post the output as a message. |

can't connnect - my solution
Setup: wireless router (laptop wireless-XP, desktop-win2000 cat5 cable)
: belkin router with DHCP for obtaining IP automatically : latest version of Zonealarm (XP firewall disabled) Problem: connection with the net was intermittent and EAC rarely could connect with the freedb. Streaming media (java) with other software was also a problem. Solution: Removed 'obtain IP automatically feature' for TCP/IP and set it up as follows: disabled DHCP in the router and set starting IP addresses to 192.168.2.2 IP: 192.168.2.2 desktop 192.168.2.3 laptop (as the alternate configuration in XP) subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.2.1 DNS: 192.168.2.1 No more connection problems - EAC and my streaming internet media work flawlessly. (also used the lmhosts file to share a common folder between the two computers - but that has nothing to do with EAC but which works well with this configuration.) Hope this helps someone. Georg |

if your isp is on transparent proxy like mine and If you get "server error" when attempting to connect to freeDB, try using public proxy server ip's in your freeDB options.

There is definately an intermittent problem with the way EAC is building its FreeDB CDDB-over-HTTP query string, for some CDs only. I did some testing, intercepting the HTTP requests, and found that on some CDs, a bad CDDB request is being sent with zero (0) tracks.
I have filed a bug report. |

(Sorry my bad English)
I have the same problem: I can´t access freedb: -I have EAC 095pb5 -I have no firewall -I tried all servers: some give me "HTTP error" and some "server error" -I have no "+" on my e-mail (just myname@gmail.com) -I have checked the registry entries -I have deleted the .DAT files -I erased all the program and registry entries and installed again ..and I have this problem since september 2003. Can anyone help me please? Really Thanks, Polengo. |

Polengo, as per above, I have found that there is an intermittent (on some CDs) problem with 0.95prebeta5. Try some other CDs. There is no workaround AFAIK - we will have to wait for a bugfix.

Here is what worked for me:
(keep in mind that I had already gone through the steps to determine that this was NOT a router/firewall issue.) 1. It turns out (as mentioned a few times in this thread) that it is CD-dependent. I tried about 25 of my CDs and found that only about half of them would retrieve freedb data automatically. The rest got Server Error. At first I was sure this was not the case b/c the first 4 CDs I put in returned ServerError, but eventually I started finding CDs that worked. So try lots of CDs - not just a few. 2. For the ones that didn't work - doing a SHIFT-DELETE to clear the track list (very important - don't skip that step) and then manually choosing get track data from remote freedb server from the menu worked for most. 3. For a few CDs nothing worked and I just had to suck it up and type in the track info myself. Regards, AC |

For remote freedb connections:
----------------------------- - Choose the right server - Make sure you have entered (if needed) an e-mail address in the freedb options of your program. --------- Hughes |

same problem...
hey, im an avid hydrogenaudio.org reader and posted there that i had a similar problem to the one discussed here, and was recommended to this thread. i too am running eac 0.95 pb 5 on win xp pro sp2 on my college lan (t1 i think). freedb has never worked in my eac. ive tried everything i can think of. uninstalled my antivirus, disabled my firewall, ive tried various cd's, tried different mirrors, the shift+delete/alt g key strokes... nothing works. when i try to get the cd info, i get "Error - Server error" every time. when i click "get active freedb server list" in options, i get "Error - HTTP protocol failure." the best work around i have found was suggested by a hydrogenaudio member. he said "You can utilize CDDB2, which generally is more accurate and complete than FreeDB, by installing the freeware Player [http://www.vuplayer.com/player.htm]. Export the info from Player as "cdplayer.ini" and then import it into EAC." hope that helps until we can find a permanent solution. good luck, and even tho we are having problems w/ it, eac is an awsome program, dont forget how valuable it is as a whole, dispite one problem area...

No fix I see. I like this progy but it may get the boot. Looks like it may be dead. Shame, I have used it for a while now.

Shift-Delete works for me!
I also had the intermittent freedb problem: EAC would sometimes fail to find the album info on freedb, but other software (MediaMonkey) would have no trouble. Once EAC failed on one album it would never work again on that album. My conclusion is: Shift-Delete clears the bad information that EAC downloaded on the first failed attempt, and lets EAC start over. So I think there is a bug in EAC that causes it to fail to find freedb info frequently. And because EAC saves the bad info, you can't try again. But Shift-Delete seems to be a good workaround, letting EAC try again. |
