Gaps with newly created wavs (not extracted)

Hi all

Thanks for the very useful tutorial on gap extraction and writing.

There has been a lot of discussion on making the new disc that you are burning an "exact copy" of the original - even to the extent of replicating the relatively unimportant track 1 pregap. I can understand why the purists want to achieve this, and have no problem with it. The program is called Exact Audio Copy after all (perhaps Exact Audio [or non Audio] Copy) might be better, if the track 1 pregap turns out to have data in it!!

Anyway, my question relates to the situation where you have wav files from a different source - not those you have extracted using EAC or in fact any other program, and you want to arrange them into a cue sheet for burning with a particular arrangment of gaps.

I have recorded music from a synthesiser into a number of wavs which are now on my PC ready for burning. The album that I'll be creating from these, require the tracks to have a mixture of gaps and non-gaps.

I can try various things when adding tracks to the playlist and edit the cue sheet later, but it would be useful to have a section of the tutorial that specifically dealt with creating a new album from tracks that were not extracted (either with or without gaps). Clearly this would be similar to the situation where the tracks were extracted without gaps. I n my opinion this is a harder situation to deal with because if all tracks are without gaps then you could easily create an entire album without gaps just by adding the tracks and makking sure EAC doesn't add anything. In practice, however, this is not what you will want to do very often, and what will be needed will be to manually add specific gaps after specific tracks.

Any chance of adding this to your tutorial for the future?!

Back to this thread still very topical after almost 6 years!!!

I guess the gaps and cue-sheet topics will be everburners in the Exact Audio Copy community. For my part I can just thank MestreLion once more and say that I went exactly like him though hours and hours of reading and testing (trial and error) to try to better understand how to handle all that stuff...

Still I am not sure if it would be more convenient to work with a single wav file cue sheet or with a multiple wav file one with gaps (so called noncompliant) to archive all my CDA's...

If any one wants to comment some pros and cons or personal experiences please feel free!

This being said, after so many hours of reading in various guides and forums I wonder what gaps actually really are? I mean at the beginning to me they simply where some blanc spaces e.g. filled with silence to (optionally) separate consecutive tracks of music. Apparently not I learned in the meantime, otherwise why would one want to 'Test Gaps On Silence' in EAC!?... So what MestreLion took some time to discover and understand 6 years ago seems to make sense and still puzzles me today, leading me to following (maybe very stupid ) questions:

Edit: Since Self help is always good I have replied to myself below...
  • How does EAC basically 'Detect Gaps' ??
Edit: The gap can be defined as the part between say Track 01 Index 00 and Track 01 Index 01 so the information is based on the track and the index information of a given CD.
  • Can there be a "gap" also at the beginning of the first track of a CDA?
(Which then would not be shown in the EAC Audio CD view as each track line has only a gap column per line, the gap after the peace of music I assume.)
Edit: Yes indeed there can be a "gap" at the beginning of the first track. Normally according to the Red Book specifications there is a standard gap of 2 seconds before Track 01 Index 01 but every (common) CD reader will never read this gap and start right at the Track 01 Index 01 (not at the Index 00!). Some (inventive?) people had the idea to put a audio track at this place and thus it would only be readable by rewinding back from Track 01 Index 01 to the beginning of Track 01 Index 00. This can be called a hidden track (actually a gap filled with noise/music...). EAC should display a hidden track (Track 01 Index 00) in red but not every CD drive may be able to read this information. There is a way to test it here.

Note that the way the information is presented in the EAC main screen is somewhat confusing since the line shows from left to right Title (Track 01), Track (Nr), Start, Length, Gap, Size etc. giving the impression that the gap of say track 01 will be after track 01 e.g. between track 01 and track 02 whereas actually the gap is always before the given track! EAC will always display at least 2 sec gap for track 01 (so here the time between Track 01 Index 00 and Track 01 Index 01) even if actually there is no gap at all!! So if say actually there is a gap of 1 sec then 3 sec will be displayed... This applies only for the first gap though!
  • If I 'process a wav' file which originally comes from a multi track CDA (with gaps) wrongly copied to a single wav file (without CUE-Sheet creation) and I use CUE Sheet-->Generate CUE sheet, how will the gaps be processed and restored properly? (I want to be able to jump from one track to any other instead of having the whole original CD in only 1 track.)
Edit: Since the correct (native) gap settings are only based on a sound engineer who decided to put the various index at a certain place (maybe in accordance to his mood of the day) there is no proper way to retrieve this information if no cue sheet has been generated. Approximatively though it is possible to put the Indexes 01 at the beginning of every new sound (song) by using Tools--> Process WAV for instance.

Finally it is important to understand that by ripping to a single wav file (so called image which is not a iso image!) ALL the audio information inclusive ALL the gaps will be in it whereas if the extraction is splitted in several wav files with gaps appended to previous track ("non compliant" default mode of EAC) then the first gap will be lost or put in other words the sum of all the generated single wav files will NOT match (actually be less than) the information in the single wav file!! Easy to understand once you know it...

Thanks for your replies!!
