Ah, so your proof is statistical. Well, I'll buy it, although I don't think it's conclusive (in the way I was looking for), although it's the most plausible explanation with the information we have right now.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I also agree that CDS200 are in effect "pre-scratched" and this should be made clearly visible on the CD cover. I don't think 99% of people who buy CDs with "Copy Control" logo know this fact. Maybe people would not buy these discs did they know all the facts.

Anti-Copy protection advocacy is difficult, because it's so hard to disseminate the useful information to all the people efficiently.

regards,
Halcyon

Yes, but these are strong statistics.
If the probability of getting twice the same error in a row is around 1/1000, then Tigre won the one-chance-out-of-1000 lotery 60000 times in a row !
The probability for this to happen is 1/ (10^180000)

???

BTW, on a couple of newer CDS discs I got (such as Duran Duran's Arena remastered; EU pressing), Plextor Premium can rip it in Secure Mode using EAC and with error correction in PlexTools like it wasn't even protected. This was not so with CDS discs I got 6-12 months earlier.

Arena uses CDS 200.5.11.90 - 5.10.090 (according to ********)

Those interested should go to the US Patents Office site
http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html
and search for patent 6,208,598.

This is the original patent which CDS (all versions) appears to use to damage the audio content on disc.

In essence, it destroys blocks of audio data selected to be where the player can guess (interpolate) the data close enough that we shouldn't be able to notice.

Andre has already posted the probable explanation to inconsistant CRCs. Many drives can't handle the volume of interpolation they have to do on these discs (run out of buffer space? especially at high rip speeds), leading to inconsistant data each time, so different CRC's.

So, we are asked to buy discs with holes cut in the music, great. We must all keep taking these discs back and asking for replacement discs to CD standard. One day they must figure out how self defeating this is.

Does anyone know why they don't put CD-Text on new CD's and make them better, not worse?

Cheers,
res

Yeah, it's great that copy protection hurts the buying customer and not the leechers.

Maybe CD-Text needs some special licence from Sony (or whoever invented CD-Text) and the labels don't want to pay.
