CD drives disappear

I've been using EAC for years and while I can't say it's been trouble free it has worked well for me. Including this morning up until some event that I have not be able to recover from. I don't know what happened but I can not get EAC to work with two of the three CD/DVD drives I have that have been working just fine. System config:

1. Operating System (example: Win98SE + all MS patches)

Vista 32 bit, all updates

2. ASPI Layer (e.g. Adaptec 4.60.1021)

Native windows

3. Type of cd-rom/cdrw/dvd-reader (e.g. Sony DDU-1621, firmware 1.06)

NEC DVD RW ND-2250A EIDE
DVD-ROM DVD-16X6S EIDE
TSST CDDVDW SH-S203B SATA - this one does still work

4. Bus type: ATA/EIDE

Both, see above

5. Chipset: VIA, SiS, Intel, etc (e.g. Via KT133A)

Asus P5Q-E MB with Intel P45 / ICH10R, Marvell 88SE6121 controller for the EIDE

6. Version of EAC used (e.g. 0.94b)

.99pb4, then tried .99pb5 - have used .99pb4 with no major problems since September.

7. What kind of error do you get (please be VERBOSE! If you get an error message, repeat it also)

If I select either of the two EIDE drives from the drop down box in EAC there is a loooooong period of EAC not responding, then the drive makes some noise, then the PC freezes, completely, but if you are very very patient it comes back. At this point the two EIDE drives are gone from Windows.

8. Additionally, what EAC settings are you using under the "Drive Options"

Secure

I was ripping this morning, got through 10 or so discs, then EAC stopped working. I have not been able to get it to work with the two discs since. The NEC is my first choice, it is very fast and has little problems with most discs. Everything else on the computer seems to work fine, including playing CDs on the two drives with another program like Foobar. Things I've tried, in no particular order, are:

- uninstalling and reinstalling EAC
- uninstalling EAC, deleting the EAC directory in Program Files, deleting the registry keys AWSoftware in HKey_Current_User, then reinstalling
- going from b4 to b5
- clearing CMOS settings and re-initializing BIOS

I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an update to my problem. I decided to uninstall and re-install the driver for the Marvell chip that provides the IDE interface. Everything worked fine again for about five rips then the drives disappeared again. For some reason EAC is trashing the driver for this device. Or causing something to be set somewhere that make it unusable for EAC. Plus causing Windows to remove it until reboot. Any thoughts?

Try installing the Adaptec ASPI (search for ForceASPI), or if you have Nero installed, copy wnaspi.dll to where EAC is installed. In EAC's settings, select use external installed ASPI layer. Maybe it will help.
