Strange behaviour (accurate stream related?)

    I trying to rip my copy of Weld by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

    When I rip track 1 of the first disc it does a LOT of re-reading at the last 20% of the track. (It re-reads everything from that point and allways the the same number of times, it fills the first row in the error box) However quality is allways the same and allways same CRC. Lowering the ripspeed in EAC doesn't help either, same quality and behaviour there.

    Ripping the same track in dbPowerAmp gives the same CRC but no re-reading.
    Ripping it in EAC without accurate stream doesn't re-read either.

    The first rip is with accurate stream and the other one without.
    Involved drives are: Plextor PX-716, Plextor Premium, Ultraplex 40.

    My copy of Weld has the number 7599-26671-2 on the spine and is Made in Germany. On the back over it also says Frace: WE893
    If anyone else has this pressing can you try to rip and post the log?

    I can post logs from one of the other drives if there's any use for it.

    As a practical consideration, I really wouldn't worry; you got the same checksum either way and EAC did not report that there were errors.

    Out of curiosity, what happens when you use burst mode or enable the use of C2 pointers?

    I'm not worried about that, however it's painfully slow to rip that track with accurate stream enabled.

    Thanks. What about a rip with C2 pointers?

    Just got your edit....interesting.

    Seems that there's possibly an addressing issue going on. What does a wave compare reveal between the C2 rip and a non-C2 rip?

    comparing the c2 rip from my ultraplex with the burst mode one gives
    6 repeated samples position 0:04:27.731

    This is another example of an Ar database entry that has a very unusual confidence level distribution.
    There are 6 elements in the data.
    Element 1 has a low confidence for track 1 of level 2 and goes up to level 23 for tracks 6 and 7.
    Element 2 starts with a confidence level of 5 for track 1, going up to level 22 for tracks 4 and 8.
    Element 3 has the same pressing offset for track 1 of element 1 but all other track offsets are different from all other elements.
    Elements 4 and 6 are the same pressing offset as element 1 and have valid data entered for track 1 only, level 2 for each.
    Element 5 again only has data for track 1, confidence level 3 and as you would expect different offset and hash values

    Yes, I hope you don't mind. Please correct me if I stated anything incorrectly (specifically that the rip done with the Pioneer drive was with a different disc of the same pressing).

    Regarding the dBpoweramp logs, I think using C2 pointers will provide better information. BTW, configure dBpoweramp not to use AccurateRip or else it may end prematurely once it gets a match from the database. The thing with dBpa is that all passes are done in burst mode so you're likely not going to get anything but F7043E6D as the CRC regardless of the settings. I'm just curious to see if C2 pointers flag anything.

    The main difference is that for me, I get 30 repeated samples, not 6. Also, I tried a few more drives, and I got more weirdness. I suspect that if you try more drives you'll find more of the same.

    Note that it's interesting to study, but I personally would not worry about 6 or 30 samples. Assuming that the burst mode track does not have actually more hidden errors.

    Yep, Spoon claims that dBpoweramp is more secure when C2 is enabled.

    Good advice. I had to do that earlier. It's in option, secure setting.

    I've reached the conclusion that dBpa does not have enough diversity to properly detect all errors. Again, it's all in the workflow, and paying attention.

    The rip done with the Pioneer was from another copy of the same pressing, that's correct.

    in the log I posted I ripped once with AR and once without with same crc both times, I will rip with c2 and without AR and post that log to.

    edit: oh and btw greynol I haven't compared burst rip between all 4 drives and between my ultraplex and my premium, I will however ask the guy with the Pioneer drive for some more logs and rip in burst mode with my PX-716.

    I have also ripped on my loptop drive (with AS and without AS not c2 or burst) it that drive behaves the same way. (Some TSSTCorp drive will post log from that when I get home again, will also post burst and c2 logs from that drive)

    burst mode in db also gives the same crc. ripped in burst mode twice but it doesn't give you a log.

    the first rip I did on the laptop (with Accurate Stream and no c2) took forever. 2,5-3 hours. It has also been very slow on all other drives.

    This isn't the place to give advice about dBpa, but all passes in dBpa are burst passes, so if it doesn't perform re-reads, you are not going to see a difference when ripping in burst mode.

    Comclusion so far is that
    Ripping with EAC in Burst mode, secure mode without Accurate Stream gives good result.
    Using Accurate Stream it re-reads a lot and takes ages but still good crc.
    Ripping with C2 gives 3 diffrent crc's on 4 drives. (with premium and px-716 having same).
    Ripping with dbpoweramp and c2 gives good crc and 3 tested drives (having problems with db and my ultraplex).

    All rips except EAC with c2 produce the same crc.
    Ripping with accurate stream causes loads of re-reads (everything past 90% of the song is re-read, took 14mins to do a test&copy of a 1 minute song on my loptop.)
    Wave compare of the c2 rip and the burst rip gives this:
    24 repeated samples position 0:01:13.626

    will do tests on this track on plextor drives later on.
